[Spoilers All][Theory] Theory about Red Lyrium, Mythal, the Blight and more. One Theory to rule them All.

I was looking into the origin of Red Lyrium and something about it didn't quite sit right with me. The explanation that the game gives is that Red Lyrium is simply Lyrium that is infected with the Darkspawn Taint. Now there are few issues with this explanation that don't quite work for me -
  1. Why do creatures infected with Red Lyrium not become Darkspawn if they are imbuing the Blight? You would think that with the sheer amount of lyrium Samson's templars are taking they would become Hurlocks by now. Similarly, there is a difference between blighted creatures (like those seen in DA:O) and red lyrium creatures (like those seen in DA:I)
  2. "Blighted" Lyrium doesn't explain why it is somehow more powerful than normal lyrium - setting aside the troubling implications of "Lyrium is alive", it doesn't match up with our normal understanding of the blight.
  3. The Red Lyrium idol found in DAII *predates* the first blight, so how can the taint found in red lyrium exist prior to the blight?
These factors lead me to conclude that, while Dagna is right, and the taint found in Red Lyrium is the same found in the Blight, this is because Red Lyrium causes the Blight, and not the reverse.
This has some rather important implications:
Based on what we have seen in DA:I's Descent DLC, we know that Lyrium is the lifeblood of the titans, and by definition, the planet. This means that it has a role similar to the lifestream in Final Fantasy 7, although a lot less "alive". What this also means is that a "taint" like the one found in Red Lyrium can spread THROUGH lyrium, almost like a virus (Insert your "Red Lyrium is coronavirus" jokes here).
You can see this in DAII with the rock wraiths, where the Lyrium in their bodies reveals itself as their skeletal structure and their connective tissue - also not a coincidence that the strongest and most powerful of them has those things made up of RED lyrium.
Why is any of this important?
Because if the Red Lyrium is tainted, and that taint travels through the lyrium "lifestream" to infect the planet and create Blights all around Thedas, this means that the taint found within it *must* come from somewhere.
If we are to believe the traditional Andrastian Chantry, this taint comes from the Black City, when Corypheus and the other Magisters of the Imperium entered it. But this doesn't match up with what Corypheus says about the city. Now could Corypheus be lying? Maybe, but why? He has no reason to lie. And there are two lines of dialogue that stand out, one in DAII: Legacy, and one in DA:I -
- In Legacy he exclaims: "The City. It was supposed to be golden. It was supposed to be ours." - This implies that the city wasn't made "Black" by their entrance into it, but it was already so.
- In Inquisition, he notes that he "had seen the throne of the gods, and it was empty." implying that the Maker, who by Andrastian lore should have been there, wasn't.
So if not by Corypheus's actions, then who or what tainted the lyrium?
I think the answer is with the death of Mythal.
Let me explain:
I can't stop thinking about a quote Solas uses in Trespasser regarding Mythal: "She was the best of them. She cared for her people. She was the voice of reason. And in their lust for power, they killed her." They being the other Elven "gods".
The thing is, the Evanuris are mages, so for them power means one thing and one thing alone: Lyrium. What kind of power would killing Mythal give them? Less competition? That seems counterintuitive - making everyone hate your guts doesn't make you more powerful unless you get something out of it.
The only way death gives power in the world of Dragon Age is through Blood Magic.
Only, this isn't really Blood Magic, because the veil doesn't exist yet. Blood Magic is just... magic!
What if the Evanuris, seeking more power, decided to sacrifice one of their own to imbue the lyrium they were using with more potency. In a world where every sapient being is immortal, this is the most heinous of crimes. It is possible this was the first recorded murder. And so, in a bid to increase their power, perform Blood Magic to alter the Lyrium, much in the manner Livius Eremond was sacrificing Wardens. And the person they sacrificed was Mythal.
Adding insult to injury, according to the pantheon, Mythal was more than just their friend and comrade... She was their mother.
The Evanuris, with the exception of Fen'Harel, commit an act so atrocious that it taints the Lyrium, making it yes, more powerful as they intended, but also blighted, tainted, an infection that spread throughout Thedas AND the Fade (still connected at the time).
This is an act so monstrous that it causes Solas to curse every single member of his race with mortality and disconnect them from the Fade. The anger he feels towards those who sacrifice Mythal is justified if you think that he and Mythal had special greetings for each other. Friends, colleagues, there are those who look at the post-credit scene between Solas and Flemeth as the meeting of old lovers. I am honestly not sure.
I would take this a step further - Both by the legend of Fen'Harel, and Solas's own words, he locks the Evanuris in the Fade, bringing the taint of what they did with them, and THAT blackens the Golden City. There were 9 Evanuri/Evanaruises (plurals are fun) prior to the sacrifice of Mythal and Fen'Harel's punishment, this means that 7 were locked in Fade. According to DAII, in traditional Dalish mythology, the Gods had evil, "tainted" if you will, counterparts: The Forgotten Ones, and Fen'Harel locks both groups away from Thedas. For the Dalish these two groups are different and distinct, but as Solas mentions, over millennia, the story changed. I would say the seven remaining Evanuris became the Forgotten Ones, leaving whatever good they had in them in the world as wisps or aspects, much like Mythal or Andruil (if you believe THAT theory about Sera).
The thing about the Veil though: it's not a wall. Beings in the Fade can still communicate and interact with the living world. In Andrastian lore, when the Maker turned his back on the spirits, some of those spirits began to whisper to the living that they were the true Gods, not the maker, and that they would achieve untold riches, power, and glory, if they could release them. These beings are referenced as "The Old Gods". Seven Old Gods, Seven Forgotten Ones. (Coincidence?! I think not!) Fun fact, if you want to take it further, there are ALSO Seven Avvar Gods. Bit weird that all of these disparate groups with no real contact with each other all decided that seven was the magic number, don't you think?
Now you might ask: well what about the Dragons and the Archdemons? Wouldn't this invalidate essentially all of DA:O? Yes and no.
When Solas locks the Evanuris in the fade, aspects of them remain in Thedas. This is also true for Mythal, whose essence is reduced into a Wisp. Now while it is true that we would expect these aspects to possess humans, is there a reason that has to be the case? In fact, if the Evanuris seek to be powerful and awe-inspiring, why pick a human? Why not pick something that had a pre-existing cult attached to it? That's where the Dragons come in. These's an interesting codex entry in DA:O discussing exactly this - why people would worship Dragons if, for the most part, they are just really powerful creatures?
Based on our interactions with the Guardian of Mythal in DA:I, we can surmise that the Evanuris had some kind of control over these Dragons as well. Again more evidence why the Evanuris would choose to inhabit the body of a Dragon.
Generally speaking, you can look at the Old Gods as dark mirrors of the Evanuris in Dalish mythology. Now IF I were to take a stab at which Forgotten One is which Old God, I would probably say:
Dumat - Probably Elgar'nan. The most powerful of these, and the leader of the Pantheon. A god of Vengeance and Pride. There is an interesting tidbit in Dragon Age: The World of Thedas, that essentially argues that it was not the Darkspawn who corrupted Dumat into being the first Archdemon, but rather it was Dumat who created the Darkspawn. I also find it very interesting that the Skull used to represent Elgar'nan looks very draconic.
Urthemiel - Probably Falon'Din. While Urthemiel is a god of beauty, and Falon'Din is the god of Fortune, Solas remarks in DA:I that Falon'Din was incredibly vain, and would attack and kill all of those who would not follow him. Someone that vain would very much market themselves as the "God of Beauty" as a Forgotten One.
Toth - I think this is Sylaise. Toth is the Old God of Fire, and in the Temple of Mythal in DA:I, there is a codex entry of a song/prayer to Sylaise, and the *very* first thing Sylaise likes to be known for is as a god "whose heat rivals Elgar'nan's light".
Andoral - I'm fairly confident this is June. For Tevinter, Andoral is the god of Slaves. By contrast June is the god of crafting. Based on our conversations with Dorian, I'm very confident in saying that most of the "crafting" in Tevinter is done by slaves.
Razikale - This is maybe Dirthamen. Setting aside the gender-bending, Razikale has quite a few codex entries in the Jaws of Hakkon DLC for DA:I in her temple in the Frostback Basin. Most of these codex entries talk about Secrets and "Ineffable Truth", something Dirthamen is associated with as well. Less compelling is the Animal evidence - the sacred animal for Dirthamen is the bear, who according to the Dalish is the only animal capable of "keeping a secret", and the location where Razikale's temple is located, the Frostback Basin (and by extension the Avvar), seems to hold the Bear in high regard, both in terms of mythology (Storvacker being the prime example) and in terms of locations (Stone-Bear hold).
Zazikel & Lusacan are the least obvious to me. Logically, if what I've said so far matches up, these must be Andruil and Ghilan'nain. Zazikel is the god of Chaos in Tevinter, while Lusacan the god of Night. Andruil is the god of the Hunt among the Dalish, while Ghilan'nain the goddess of the Halla, and by extension, Nature. While I'm reaching here, I would say that Zazikel is probably Ghilan'nain, while Lusacan is Andruil. For evidence, I would cite the fact that while Ghilan'nain embodies nature, a dark mirror of nature could be Chaos. The circle of life includes a lot of death and chaos. More compelling in my mind, is Lusacan and Andruil. Lusacan is the god of night, and the power the night brings, something that jives well with the hunt and hunting. More importantly, this makes more sense if you believe the Sera is Andruil theory. Lusacan is one of the few Old Gods to have never been resurrected as an Archdemon. If Andruil prefers to inhabit humans, then this makes sense - Lusacan can't be resurrected as an Archdemon because he's not in a dragon!
SOOOOOO
(1/3) TL:DR: I believe that Red Lyrium is Lyrium tainted by Blood Magic. This Blood Magic occurred when the Evanuris sacrificed Mythal to increase their own power. The taint present in Red Lyrium is what creates the Blight, not the other way around, and because Red Lyrium is present in the Fade, this is what blackens the Golden City.
(2/3) TL:DR: When Solas locks the Evanuris into the Fade, he creates the beings we now know as the Forgotten Ones/ the Old Gods. These beings are one and the same, and all they want is to get out. This is why they convinced Corypheus and the other Magisters to enter the fade and set them free.
(3/3) TL:DR: Because Dragons are closely associated with the Evanuris, some of them decide to have their aspects inhabit these dragons, in the same way Mythal lives within Flemeth, or Urthemiel within Kieran. This is both how the spirit of these beings can pass to someone else after being killed as an Archdemon, and why Dragon Cults exist throughout Thedas.
EDIT
Just to add on the point I made about the Avvar Pantheon - while the transition between the Avvar gods and the Evanuris isn't quite as clear cut as the Old Gods, there are two things that I picked up on: For the Avvar, their version of Mythal, the Lady of the Skies, is also the goddess of the dead, and the Avvar death ritual used in her honor involves "sacrificing the unneeded body so a fragment of the soul may live on" - doesn't that sound VERY similar to what happened to Mythal in my theory?
Also, side note, of all the creatures that Hakkon Wintersbreath could have manifested as during the second blight, this god ALSO manifested as a Dragon? The DLC claims that the Jaws of Hakkon bound the spirit into the Dragon, but what kind of mage beyond Flemeth has that kind of power?
Lastly, in the climax of the DLC, Gurd Harofsen, the leader of the renewed Jaws of Hakkon, tries to draw Hakkon out of the Dragon and into himself, and immediately transforms into a Revenant, which is what you get when a body is possessed by a creature of the Fade. How is that possible unless Hakkon himself is a creature of the Fade too?
