Fear tickles our nerves and causes the release of adrenaline into the blood. And often we ourselves are looking for these thrills. It's easy to find games, movies, and books that are designed to scare us a little. Sometimes we are frightened by disgusting creatures, sometimes by darkness within ourselves, which takes on embodiment from blood and cruelty. But it happens that we find horror where we do not expect it.
Homeworld is neither a horror nor a shooter with elements of horror. This is a series of strategies. Surely, many of you if didn’t play it, then heard about it. But between the old, original, parts of 1999 and 2003 there was something that was very different from them - Cataclysm. Unlike neither part of the series itself, nor the standard strategy, this game was something else. I hope that two short drafts will remind you about this game. The first part will be an introduction (a small retelling is really important), and the second will tell about the distinguishing features of the game and why you should not forget about this strategy.

Sometimes war feeds itself and creates a cycle from which it is difficult to break out. Former conflicts and the legacy of the past become fuel and sparks for new reasons to take up arms.
Once exiled and seeking to find their Homeworld, the Kushan became the pebble that caused an avalanche in the slowly decaying due to the tyrannical and corrupt rule Taiidan Empire. The imperial fleet’s readiness to execute the insane order to genocide the entire planet’s population for crimes of three thousand years ago led only to the outbreak of civil war and millions of victims among the Taiidani themselves.
The Empire burned down with its Emperor on the orbit of Hiigara, the ancient homeland of the Kushan. The combined forces of the Exiles and the rebels against the Taiidani regime were able to burn not only the emperor’s ship, but also the imperial cloning center, thanks to which the Emperor’s clone occupied the throne over and over again after the death of his predecessor for four centuries.
The vast territories of the Empire split into separate worlds and systems, which soon again became mired in a bloody civil war. Five years later, only 60 of the 150 star systems continued to call themselves Taiidani or the Taiidan Republic. The rest scattered into small kingdoms and independent worlds. Fragile calm was established only for a moment, because not everyone left their personal ambitions, and the shadow of the past hung over both the Republic and Hiigara.
Even devoid of unity and ruler, many important figures of the Empire left the Republic to create their own states among the breakaway border worlds. These "Loyalists" saw the Republican as traitors, and the new Hiigarans as the main culprits of the fall of the Empire. Still guiding the remnants of the Imperial fleet and military bases, they tried to unite the border worlds and their own ranks by force of arms for the sake of one goal - the completion of the genocide of the surviving Exiles on Hiigara. Loyalists believed that once an Imperial fleet regains its orbit over Hiigara again, their former greatness will be reborn from the ashes.
Only one faction undoubtedly won out with the erupted chaos. Turanic Raiders - nomads, mercenaries and pirates - for many decades enjoyed the favor of the last Taiidani Emperor. Hordes of pirates of unknown origin were a tool to weaken the neighbors of the Empire, but previously loyal to the throne, Raiders went into the shadows before the battle of Hiigara. They took advantage of the power vacuum and founded Bandit Kingdoms in the former provinces of the Empire. From vagrants, they became a force to be reckoned with, and their cooperation with the imperialists was another round of the pursuit for power, wealth and revenge.

The Exiles regained their ancient homeland, their Homeworld, but the price was high. Many gave their lives on this journey, and awakened from cryo pods Kushan discovered that their entire past life had burned down along with Kharak, which they called home for generations. Their entire history and culture has remained among several hundred thousand survivors.
Previously united by a common enemy and goal, the Kiithid were mired in internal rivalry. Debates, negotiations and special offers have become methods of strong, numerous families to expand their influence. The "Sleepers", the smallest Kiithid, were a welcome replenishment for strong clans. "Merger" meant the loss of independence and the rights of a free kiith. Such a fate awaited also the Kiith Somtaaw, whose skills could “serve the interests of the whole people of Hiigara” under the wing of the kiith Nabaal. Unadmitted by many more powerful clans, the Somtaaw realized that their hope for independence lay outside of Hiigara. Only with luck and support for the Kiithid Paktu and Soban, Somtaaw and the small clans that joined their ranks were able to gain access to the production facilities of the former mother ship for 45 days.
The resources of the whole kiith were thrown to create three ships. The first to descend from the slipway was Faal-Corum, Silent Wayfarer, a huge explorer-class ship adapted for missions in deep space. 10 days later, Kuun-Lan, Purifying Flame, Faal Korum's twin brother, was built. The last was Clee-San, Truth Seeker, a science ship for outer space exploration. Unlike anything built earlier, they became a symbol of the growing fragmentation of the Kiithid of Hiigara, where families without influence were forced to invent a lot from scratch and adapt to their needs purchased or stolen alien technologies for their own survival.

The flame of engines, the light of ion lances, short radio transmissions, flashes of blaze and air escaping through cracks in the hull - the war continued and raged everywhere. Turanic Raiders appeared from nowhere, struck and disappeared. The Taiidan Imperialist fleets attacked Hiigara’s defenses over and over again, and whose fragile forces repulsed the assault over and over again. Chaos overwhelmed the inhabited systems, and the galaxy was in a pyrexia for many years.
But fortuity in one of the battles changed the course of the whole war. The ancient beacon pod found during the rescue operation drifted in space and could have gone unnoticed for a long time, if not for a combination of circumstances. Created more than a million years ago and sending a weak signal, this sample of unknown technology became the trophy of the Kuun-Lan crew.
The existence of a kiith depended on an advantage over everyone else, and Kiith-Sa, leader of the clan, ordered to hide the find from the rest of the Kiitid for the sake of being able to obtain ancient technologies and knowledge. Whether this was a wise decision is unknown. But events took their course, and the research ship Clee-San set off to study the find.

Screams announced the corridors of Kuun-Lan. Panic and biological alert filled lower levels of the ship. Something escaped and kills the crew, penetrates the bulkheads and spreads. An alarm siren and screams of pain echo through an internal communication, while a member of the research team asks to save the ship and doom all those locked down below before it is too late. On command, the captures on the hull open, and a rotating lower deck with hundreds screaming in horror people rushes into the darkness of space.
A plasma arc sparkles, and desperate screams come from other ships. It grows and absorbs time after time. Absorbs metal, absorbs bones and flesh. Turns the body against the mind, moves along the nerves, penetrates the brain and grows even more on what was once the human consciousness. Weaves itself into the hull and ship systems. Becomes a separate being.
Something alive. An unknown and incomprehensible adversary whose motives are hidden. Stunning and adsorbing horror, patiently waiting in the void of space in order to break through the hull of the ship to the defenseless crew inside.
It is driven by hunger and desire to consume. It wants more. It wants an ancient beacon, wants to spread, wants to absorb flesh and metal. And it goes after Kuun-Lan.
