TLDR; 8/10. This is a great port of a great horror game. Incredible tension, gorgeous visuals, a compelling story and unforgettable moments. There are some glitches, frame rate drops, and general frustrating moments that hold the game back from being perfect. If you like the Aliens Franchise and want something scary to play this week, this is the game for you.

It’s been a while since I’ve written a review. I was originally going to make one for Witcher 3 (I have my screenshots ready in an album to share) but given that this is the end of October and Halloween is tomorrow, what better time is there to talk about Alien Isolation? Also, like Witcher, this is a game that deserves immediate attention and an extensive analysis. It’s currently on sale for 20 bucks in Eshop so I HAD to snag it while it was that low. Is this game worth it if you are you a fan of the Alien Franchise, or do you want a good horror game this week? Let’s dive into this experience.
2 Quick Disclamiers:
First, I got an album of both gameplay and screenshots to share! Links are down below. I don’t consider anything I showed to be a spoiler, but if you don’t want to see certain locations, or weapons, I would say to avoid the gameplay album. You can see for yourself just how good the game can look and run. I captured some really insane stuff for my first play through!
Second, I have to preface this review by saying I played the game on EASY mode. I will try not to let this influence any observations I have in the review and to stay as objective as possible, however, so keep that in mind.

The Port:

One of the better ports of a Switch game. If you haven’t seen the Digital Foundry video on this game, They describe how it’s actually superior to the PS4 and Xbox One versions in several ways. It has smoother textures, runs as good if not better than them at times, and its leagues better than the 360 and PS3 Versions. It ALSO includes the DLC released for the game, mainly the ones featuring the original Alien Cast: Expendable Crew and Last Survivor. Now, what I wish these videos would cover is that the game does have frame rate problems later on, especially when the Alien is a room with other humans or intractable items. It can drop to below 30 pretty hard, and there were some sections where I died over and over again to find the Alien in the same spot I spawned in, and the game ALWAYS had framerate drops when it happened. Overall though, it is a really excellent port, despite it’s small hiccups. Im gonna talk more about the visuals later in this review.


This game takes place 15 years after the first Alien film. You play as Amanda Ripley, Ellen Ripley’s daughter from the films. She works in space just like her mother and her crew gets a call that someone salvaged a recording Ellen left behind. The ship docks in the Sevestapool, this giant ass space station, and Ripley with a few of her peers take a platform outside to enter. However, things go wrong right away as some debris hits them, knocking them all into space, with Ripley being able to latch onto the edge of the space station and get inside safely. She finds it empty and in ruins: something tore it up, and killed several people. As you’d expect, a creature is running amok around the ship, and it’s up to you to guide Ripley out of this nightmare, and to stay away from this monster. You’ll be running, hiding, and engaging in combat with tons of hostile enemies, like suddenly hostile helpful androids that have gone rogue and begin attacking you.
The story isn’t the best out there, but it’s serviceable and has lots of lore for the franchise. Amanda is a good protagonist: she’s capable, strong, fast, and can take care of herself, but she’s just in this horrible situation and you wanna see her escape, so the game got that right. One problem I had with Amanda, and a general issue with the narrative, is that the voice acting is not great, with Amanda in particular having some really hit or miss lines: sometimes her voice actress delivers excellent lines, other times it’s like she was given no direction at all for the scenes she had. For the most part, however, the voice acting is fine, and not awful, just some smaller bits where it might take you out of the story. On the topic of other small issues regarding the presentation, the lip synching is really bad, both in cutscenes and in game, though keep in mind that this is an issue all the versions of this game share. Finally, one last criticism of the story, is that the ending is super abrupt and anti climatic, especially given what you had to do earlier to get to it. Without giving anything away, it sequel baits hard (which since then they’ve continued that story in the comics/mobile game) and I just can’t stand it when games do this. But it’s the journey there that’s the real meat and potatoes, so not a big deal honestly.
Now the really good stuff that makes the game’s story something special. First, the presentation is some of the best i’ve seen in any game ever. The game looks INCREDIBLE, even today in 2020. The design of the ship is just magnificent: every corner of every room is extremely detailed. Posters, photos of families, food scattered everywhere, etc, and all nicely textured as well. Every photo has tons of details, even calendars have markings in pens and unique handwriting on them. Each area of the ship feels so alive: there are gadgets and gizmos going off everywhere, smoke coming from the ceiling, it all feels just right, and looks one to one like the sets in the films. The lighting is incredible, the way shadows arc and move past windows as the planets rotate, you can seriously see dust particles near the windows if you look close enough. And then the sound design is just heavenly, both for the ship and for enemies like the Alien. What makes it work is that when alarms and thudding sounds are going off, you can’t tell sometimes if it’s just the ship, or the Alien moving around near you, and it makes the game TERRIFYING and oozing with tension when that happens, as you frantically move around trying to stay alive. There are some levels in the story where all you do is just walk around in a space suit and its STILL tense and scary, just because of the presentation. Overall, I’d say the story is carried by the breathtaking visuals and atmosphere, but it’s still a serviceable solid story regardless.


Alien Isolation is a first person survival horror game to the most extreme degree. This is a game you need to be patient with, to play slow, and to be prepared for anything to happen. Generally, in every area you will have a goal to work towards, like reaching a new area, turning on generators to activate doors or elevators, find keycards to gain access to certain areas, etc. You can run, crouch, crawl, and hide in various things, like lockers, under beds, behind tables, etc. You can crawl into vents to gain access to new areas, or go around threats like the Alien or androids if they’re in the area.
Ripley has a ton of tools at her disposal: a revolver and shotgun to deal with hostile enemies, a flamethrower later in the game, flares, EMP mines for androids, Molotov cocktails, medkits to heal yourself, noisemakers to cause distractions, etc. As you explore the space station, you will come across scrap and various items that you can pick up and use for crafting these items. You have to craft these items in real time and the game does not pause when you do this so make sure you aren’t doing it and leaving yourself vulnerable to be attacked: hide somewhere or find a safe area to craft things. The best tool you have is the Motion Tracker, straight from the films! It detects when something is close by, which can be the Alien, or Androids and humans. Use this to keep tabs on enemies you can’t see.
Let’s talk about saving. This game does not save automatically, save for a few notable sections where you are transported to a new area. You know how in the old Resident Evil games you have to use Type Writers to save your game manually? It’s the same thing here, there are Emergency Stations Ripley uses and you can save your game there. The game is generous enough with where these save stations are, but the catch is that enemies can get into areas where the save station is. And yes. THIS INCLUDES THE ALIEN. Don’t worry, however, about soft locking yourself if this ends up happening, and if you die after you save the enemy will always be in the room: it’s possible to reload an older save so that you don’t get stuck. Also, I believe the enemies are moved to different locations if you die. One time the Alien was upstairs and I died after saving, but then it was downstairs when I reloaded the save. A LOOOOOT of tension comes from just being able to save the game, you’re tense and want to get to the next save station as soon as possible, but if you rush it you’ll probably die, and have to do that section all over again. There’s a psychology to stressing the player out with these save stations that I adore.
While trying to progress, unlock doors and turn on generators, there will usually be enemies you’ll have to deal with. I’ll talk about the Alien in a bit, but first let’s discuss the other enemies in the game: Androids, and…. Other humans? Yeah, at certain points some of the crew members will get hostile with you and shoot you on sight. They have a pretty good reason, with a big monster running around they want to stick together and kill anything that moves. And I really don’t like these parts: it reminds of Aliens Colonial Marines, a really awful Aliens game from 2013. Not only are they super telegraphed about when they’ll attack you (if they have guns, they will always shoot you, they’ll never hesitate.) but one of the worst levels in the game is when the Alien isn’t around for a bit and you have a section where you just gun down Androids and humans trying to kill you, and it really feels out of place with the rest of the game. The AI for them is ok but they can do stupid stuff like charge at you in the open, or fire at the Alien if it shows up (you can guess what happens to them) on that note, The Alien will hear gunshots if you engage in a battle with other humans, or the androids, so it’s actually possible to intentionally attack a group of humans and hide, allowing the Alien to pick them off for you. Now THAT can be really fun and awesome when it works. Still, I think this game could have done without human enemies, I just feel like they break the pacing of the game too much.
The Androids are the second biggest threat you have to deal with. They’re not super scary, but they’ll prove to be a hassle for the player if you can’t deal with, or evade them. They’re very slow, but they can soak up a decent amount of ammo, won’t die right away from fire, and are very difficult to kill with your melee attack (this flimsy wrench.) With a stun baton, you can beat the snot out of them, or take em out with revolver bullets or your shotgun, but not only does that use precious ammo, but the Alien will hear that and come from you. Unlike the humans, it doesn’t really care about the Androids at all, probably because they’re not organic and can’t produce the chestburters and all that, so if you are fighting Androids the Alien will only be after you. I feel like you spend too much time fighting them in the game, and they’re thrown into areas where they’re not hard to avoid, but they’re just annoying and get in your way all the time. I would say about half of the game is fighting them, and the other half are avoiding the Alien, with human encounters occurring every now and then.


I had to make a separate section for this damn thing because there’s a lot to talk about. First, we need to discuss it’s AI: It has what is called a “DYNAMIC AI” Which means it doesn’t follow any particular pattern. You know in some stealth games where the enemies have really easily scripted patterns to exploit? They walk forward a bit, look both ways, turn around, and repeat the process, things like that. The Androids do this (for a valid reason since they are literally machines.) Now, with the Alien, take that idea and throw it out the window because the Alien just does whatever the Hell it wants. It’ll walk around every room, turn around with no warning, it’ll crawl through vents to navigate, and generally, it will almost seem like it’s exploring the station like you. If the Alien get’s it’s hands on you, game over, you’re dead in one hit.
As you might expect, you cannot kill the Alien: no gun or weapon can dent it, so don’t every try, even when you get the Flamethrower, not only is that several hours in, but the Alien will run away from you and come back moments later if you do that. Also, Flamethrower ammo is hard to find so dont rely on it. YOU HAVE to hide from it, using the Flamethrower as an emergency or tactical option to get through a section easier. This is what makes the game so tense: The Alien is unpredictable and dangerous, which makes it the perfect threat to avoid in this game. You can’t adhere to one strategy every time because sometimes it won’t work out the way you want it to. You are NEVER safe with the Alien around, and there’s a lot of little things it does that make it scary to evade. Here are some tips with dealing with the Alien
1: DO NOT RUN. EVER. The Alien is 3 times faster than you. If you run, it WILL get you and kill you, no ifs or buts. When the Alien is not around, you can try to run, but don’t get used to it. This isn’t Outlast (another game I will review) You gotta either fight it off or hide until it’s safe to sneak over.
2: DO NOT USE THE MOTION TRACKER WHEN THE ALIEN IS NEARBY. I see so many Youtubers die because they aren’t aware of this: THE ALIEN CAN HEAR YOU IF YOU USE THE MOTION TRACKER. If it’s far enough away you can check it to see how close it is, but if it’s close to a room you’re in it’ll run inside and look for you.
3: Don’t hide in the same areas all the time. The Alien gets progressively smarter and plays against your own style. It adapts to how you play could say. If you spend all your time hiding in lockers, it’ll start to check in them. Don’t get too cozy in vents because the Alien can crawl in and kill you (which is the scariest shit I’ve ever seen I swear) Always stay moving, and if you have to hide, don’t hide for too long.
4: Utilize your traps and tools well. Some items, like the Flares, generally are not that useful, but against the Alien they help a lot. Throwing a Flare can distract the Alien, and it’ll sit there and look at it for a while. If the Alien is blocking your way into an elevator or door, draw it away with that, or a noise maker, or you can force it away with the Flamethrower and quickly get inside before it has a chance to come back. Adapting and forming strategies will help you navigate the game a lot better.
The Alien is what sells the horror in this game, and on higher difficulties it becomes a straight predator for your ass. I will never forget some sections with the Alien, like how I’m looting a room, turn around, and suddenly see it slowly creeping down the hallway, or I see it’s shadow looming and getting closer. They did an incredible job. There are only 2 gripes I have with the Alien. First, when it goes up and into the vents, it moves WAAAAY faster. I’ve seen it teleport from a higher floor or a room super far away, to it just appearing in a room on the opposite side. That feels cheap when it happens, because it basically gets catapulted over to you to annoy you. Second, the way it moves can be kinda clunky. It can get stuck on objects for a brief moment, and it only walks or runs around. It never crawls on the walls, or anything like that. For such a complex AI, I can forgive these because of how advanced it usually is.
Overall, high scores for the gameplay. Sometimes it’ll get annoying and you’ll die and replay sections a lot, but it never stops being tense.


The music is excellent as you’d expect, fits the atmosphere perfectly. It feels like it was ripped straight from the films. The setting options are all decent: you can view the controls and they show you which buttons do what, you can turn off the film grain and other graphical options, all that good stuff.
The DLC missions the game comes with are good, but short, so don’t expect them to take you longer than an hour or two. There’s also a Survivor mode which is for Leaderboard scores, so you can try that if you wanna compete and see how well you can do.
I do have to mention a few glitches quickly: I had a strange audio glitch where all the sound cut out after coming out of a vent: no sound effects, no music, no voice acting when the characters were talking. Loading my save fixed this issue. One time I went into an untextured elevator with water at the bottom, and the floor loaded in and the water disappeared. Sometimes when the Alien or Android is killing you, Ripley will keep talking because it’s a scripted thing that happens. Finally, I loaded up a save one time and my screen had an icon like I was picking up an item, when I wasn’t near it. Thankfully this went away quickly. None of these are major glitches, I had no hard crashes, but they are little annoyances.


I want to give this game a high score, like a 10, but it has too many small issues for me to say its a masterpiece. Despite that, it is still an incredible horror game, with some of the best atmosphere you could ask for. If you have ANY love for the Alien Franchise, you need to play this. If you just want a good horror game, this will do it for you. If you can deal with the slower gameplay and stealth aspects, you will love it too.

Rating the games that have kept me sane during the neverending argentine quarantine

Greetings from Argentina! I've always had a passion for gaming and this year I've been granted the chance of playing on my PS4 for months straight with no commitments whatsoever (be careful what you wish for I guess). On March 20th my country went into lock down and... well, it's still going, although much less strictly so. Anyways, I decided to share my thoughts on all the games I played during quarantine and, since I love getting trophies/achievements, I'll talk a bit about those aswell. If you have a PS4 you'll probably recognize some of these games from PS Plus lineups.
Goat Simulator - 3.0 / 10. Yikes. It's fun for a few minutes, then you start to question what are you doing with your life. Props to the developers for making big bucks from a literally unfinished, broken game tho.
Platinum: Got it (please don't judge me). 4 / 10. I was pretty easy except for one trophy that asked you to get a high score on a Flappy-Bird-like minigame.
Defunct - 6.0 / 10. Bought this game for like 25 cents, cause why not. For that price, it was ok. It's short, it feels underdeveloped, and the sound design is trash, but I paid a quarter for it so whatever (How much is that in argentine pesos? Oh, right, it's 50 -- I mean 70 -- wait, it's 100 -- ok now it's 120...).
Platinum: I don't have it yet but I'll probably get it in the future. I predict a 7/10. Game is short so all Story mode related trophies are easy enough. Hardest challenge comes from "Aah, Heck No!", a trophy that asks you to get Platinum medals in all levels. It's tricky and the controls are not the best. We'll see how it goes.
Rogue Legacy - 9.0 / 10. Holy heck did this game surprise me. Bought it for $3 or so and had a BLAST. Super addictive, quick-paced and with an amazing gameplay loop. Quite challenging at times, aswell, but everytime I died I wanted to hop in just one more time. The difficulty also has a good learning curve, at first you'll die just a couple of rooms in and, by the end of it, you'll be able to clear many sections in one go. It also counts with a New Game system which gets pretty crazy, if you're into that kind of stuff (I wasn't).
Platinum: I got it and I couldn't believe it. 8.5 / 10. The worse part is beating the remixed bosses. There are only five but, boy, do they give you some trouble. You also need to beat the game dying 15 times or less, although you can savescum which I totally did not do let's move on to the next game.
Child of Light - 8.0 / 10. Super cute, fun game. The turn-based combat is fun although quite easy. The art is beautiful, I never got tired of it. It's a game that shines more for its visuals rather than its gameplay, but overall it's a solid experience.
Platinum: There's no platinum trophy lamely. 3 / 10. All the trophies are pretty easy with barely any post-game clean up.
Wuppo - 10 / 10. Here it is, the one that blew me away. I was scrolling past the latest sales and I saw this cute, cartooney game for $3. I picked it up without knowing it would become my favourite indie so far. An excellent platformer with a good sense of exploration, funny dialogue, enviroments and cities that feel alive (dozens of other creatures just walking around, functioning trains, a theme park, etc), and just fun all around. Now, I do gotta say, the PS4 port just didn't get much love. The button layout could be better, it has not received many updates (unlike PC), and Boss Run mode is simply broken... but I just can't rate this game any lower, I loved it.
Platinum: Oh boy, I got it. 9 / 10. It's all fun and games until you beat the story. Then you raise your head, you see a shiny platinum trophy ahead... and a giant, muscular, disgusting-looking creature in the way. It's called "Boss Run: impossible", and it's here to beat your ass. This trophy asks you to beat Boss Run mode without buying any upgrades or heals. That means, beating all bosses in a row, on Hard (can't change difficulty, unlike PC), with your basic gun, and with only 1 heal (instead of 3, on PC). I had to use a glitch that allowed me to play with 200 HP instead of 100, and it was still one of the hardest trophies I've done. Proud of it, tho.
Bioshock Remastered - 8.0 / 10. Always wanted to play this game, and it was worth the wait. Can't say I felt in love with it, but it was pretty good regardless. Excellent atmosphere, decent gameplay, and an interesting story with a "holy sh*t" moment (you know what I'm talking about).
Platinum: Got it. 4.5 / 10. Not too hard, just a couple of missable trophies to keep an eye on.
Bioshock 2 Remastered - 7.5 / 10. Another good game, better gameplay, just a step behind its predecessor. This time is the combat keeping you going instead of the story, and that's okay.
Platinum: Don't have it yet. I predict a 6 / 10, having to complete the game on Hard and going crazy with the camera to research all enemy types (missed this trophy on my first playthrough lamely).
Bioshock Infinite - 8.5 / 10. Bit of a hot take around here but, yeah, I enjoyed this one a bit more. The game feels simplified, although that didn't bother me. The dark, creepy atmosphere is thrown out the window and instead you'll visit shiny areas among clouds. I gotta say, the story grabbed me and the ending solified this one as the best Bioshock for me.
Platinum: Don't have it yet. It seems to be a 7.5 / 10. The last difficulty is probably a pain, no glitches in sight, and a handful of collectibles because that's super fun right?
Steamworld Dig - 7 / 10. Bought this game because I heard pretty good things about it. It was nice, but I wasn't really that much into it. Length's pretty short so, no big deal. The mechanics are good and there's a nice sense of progression as you upgrade your gear and start mining blocks faster, faster, FASTER.
Platinum: No platinum trophy :C Overall it's a 5.5 / 10. You need to speed run the game and complete it without dying, which for now I'm not willing to do.
Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales - 9 / 10. I had plently of fun in Gwent (both the Witcher minigame and the standalone version) so I was looking forward to this. Excellent visuals, good exploration, and an amazing set of characters that'll join or leave you depending on your choices throughout the story. I actually felt like my decisions mattered, and that they had consequences in the long run.
Platinum: Got it. 4 / 10. Not too hard, only problem is that some trophies are missable and there's no chapter select. That being said, Easy difficulty actually lets you skip the battles to rush through the game in order get that one trophy that got away.
Shadow of The Collosus (Remake) - 8.5 / 10. Shit camera. Don't get me wrong, it's a classic, a really good game, but that's the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about it: the camera's bad. It's disappointing that they didn't improve it, considering it's a remake. Unique gameplay, pretty simple on paper but the game knows how to keep it interesting and fun all the way through. I love the sense of 'scale' in this game, making you feel like an ant whenever you're fighting a boss.
Platinum: Got it after quite a grind. 6 / 10. Not hard at all, but multiple playthroughs are required.
Control - 9 / 10. Having played Alan Wake back in the day on my Xbox 360 (RIP you beautiful thing), I had high expectations for this game. It did not disappoint. Fast and smooth gameplay, fun abilities to wreck your enemies. Graphics are good but what shines the most as far as visuals go is the use of colors, the surrealism, and the environment design. This game is a screenshot generator and apparently it's pretty self-aware since a lot of times it will freeze so you can appreciate the visuals oh wait that is not supposed to happen. Yeah, the game becomes a slideshow sometimes, specially while performing very resource-heavy actions like closing the menu. Anyways...
Platinum: Got it, of course! 4 / 10. Pretty easy and fun all around.
